PADI Underwater Navigator Specialty Course
Duration: 1 day. 3 open water dives.
Prerequisites: Open Water Divers at least 10 years old may participate.
Who should take this course?
Be the scuba diver everyone wants to follow because you know where you are and where you’re going. The PADI Underwater Navigator course fine-tunes your observation skills and teaches you to more accurately use your compass underwater. If you like challenges with big rewards, take this course and have fun finding your way.
If you’re a PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver who is at least 10 years old, you can enroll in the PADI Underwater Navigator Specialty course.
What will you learn?
You’ll learn the tools of the trade, including navigation using natural clues and by following compass headings. During three scuba dives, you’ll practice:
Methods to estimate distance underwater.
Compass navigation while making at least five turns.
Marking or relocating a submerged object or position from the surface.
Underwater map making.
You may be able to get college credit for the Underwater Navigator course – ask your instructor.
Also, the first dive of this PADI Specialty Diver course may credit as an Adventure Dive toward your Advanced Open Water Diver certification – ask your instructor about earning credit.
How can you start learning now?
PADI Underwater Navigator eLearning is a convenient way for student divers to complete the independent study portion of their Underwater Navigator specialty course from a laptop/desktop computer or mobile device.
The best experience is to study online, however, if students find themselves without internet for periods (such as when commuting or traveling) or have inconsistent, poor internet services, they can download content to study offline via the PADI Training app.
The PADI Training app is available for Apple® iOS devices and Android™ devices. It’s best if devices are no more than three generations old. Content can be downloaded in sections for download convenience with a total file size of approximately 188 MB.
PADI Underwater Navigator eLearning provides the basic knowledge for navigating using natural clues and by following compass headings along with methods for estimating distance underwater, marking and relocating submerged objects and underwater map making, , along with the underwater navigation diving safety concepts and procedures you’ll apply you’ll apply during the three required dives.
PADI Underwater Navigator eLearning includes all of the required study materials for the Underwater Navigator specialty course including:
- Content from the Underwater Navigation Manual
- Underwater Navigation Video
- All assessments (Knowledge Reviews, Exercise Questions, and eRecord)
What scuba gear will you use?
Besides your basic scuba equipment, you’ll need a compass and underwater slate. Your PADI Instructor may suggest other gear to help you stay oriented, such as marker buoys or lines and reels.
